Shanghai is cooking this summer with temperatures in the high 30s and beyond. That doesn’t mean the networking stops though! Even though many people are out of town there are still lots of networking events going on. How can you make the most of them this summer?
1. Just do it
I know, I know. It’s hot, humid and horrible out there, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be out networking. Yes, there may be fewer people, but that means less competition and deeper bonds with the people you do meet. Just take a deep breath, think cooling thoughts and leave your air-conditioned paradise!
2. Do sweat the small stuff
Summertime means sweat, and sweat means looking and smelling bad. Avoid this by wearing colors and fabrics that don’t show the sweat so much and wiping off your hands and face in the bathroom after entering a networking event. Not only will you feel better, you’ll also look a lot more appealing than the other people coated in perspiration, drawing more people towards you. And, although I know 99.9% of you are doing this already, wearing deodorant is essential in summer. You can look fantastic and have a handshake of steel, but one bad smell can kill a first impression dead and be remembered for ages.
3. Handshakes without the horror
Good handshakes are clean, dry and firm: No one wants to shake a clammy hand dripping in sweat. Wipe your hands in the bathroom at the start of an event, or at least discreetly wipe them on your trousers before shaking hands. Result: an impressive handshake and a great first impression.
4. Short sleeves: Just say no
This is one for the men: Some people associate short-sleeved dress shirts with fast food employees. It’s much better to wear a long sleeved shirt and roll up the sleeves to elbow level. it looks a lot more professional and businesslike.
5. Go easier on the alcohol
It’s quite common to have a few drinks when you’re out there meeting people, but take it easier than you normally would. The heat means you’ll get dehydrated a lot more easily and alcohol may have a stronger effect than usual, both on your body at the time and how you’ll feel the next morning.
Have fun networking, and I hope to see you at some of the events around town!
How are you beating the heat networking this summer? Leave a comment and let us know!
